Washington – A new campaign from various groups aims to inform businesses and public entities on the safe use of unmanned aircraft systems, also known as drones.

The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the Small UAV Coalition have partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration for the Know Before You Fly campaign.

The campaign explains recreational and commercial use of the aircraft and how to obtain a certificate of waiver or authorization from FAA for operating public aircraft.

It instructs users to fly drones below 400 feet and not to fly the aircraft out of eyesight.

Other guidance for recreational users includes:

  • Do not fly over unprotected people or moving vehicles. Stay at least 25 feet away from people and “vulnerable” property.
  • Before flying within 5 miles of an airport, contact the airport or control tower.
  • Do not fly in unfavorable weather conditions, such as high winds or reduced visibility.
