Study links asbestos exposure to heart disease, stroke
Derbyshire, England – Occupational exposure to asbestos may increase a worker’s risk of stroke and heart disease, according to new research from the U.K.-based Health and Safety Laboratory.
Researchers followed 98,912 British asbestos workers from 1971 to 2005. Of the 15,557 worker fatalities that occurred within the group during that time, 1,053 were from stroke and 4,185 were from heart disease, according to the study abstract.
Researchers concluded that the risk of stroke and heart disease was significantly higher for asbestos workers than the general population.
The study was published online April 2 in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
