Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on May 31 shut down 26 bus companies due to safety concerns – the largest single shutdown in the agency’s history.

The companies (.pdf file) operated along Interstate 95 from New York to Florida and were overseen by three core companies: Apex Bus Inc. (.pdf file), I-95 Coach Inc. (.pdf file) and New Century Travel Inc. (.pdf file).

FMCSA issued the orders following a yearlong investigation that uncovered the following violations:

  • Drivers operating without valid commercial driver’s licenses
  • Lack of alcohol and drug testing
  • Irregular inspections and repairs
  • Hours-of-service and driver qualification violations

Ten individual bus company employees also were ordered to discontinue passenger transportation operations, such as selling bus tickets, according to an FMCSA press release.
