Out-of-service rate increases during annual CMV brake inspection event
Washington – About 1 out of 7 commercial motor vehicles inspected during Brake Safety Week (Sept. 9-15) were placed out-of-service for overall brake-related violations, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
Federal, state and local safety inspectors conducted brake inspections on 21,255 trucks and buses in the United States and Canada during the event, which is sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and CVSA as part of the Operation Air Brake Campaign.
The out-of-service rate (15.3 percent) increased for the second year in a row – the rate was 14.2 percent in 2011 and 13.5 percent in 2010.
According to a CVSA press release, faulty brakes factor into 29.4 percent of CMV crashes.
