NIOSH: Include occupation data in electronic health records

Washington – The Health Information Technology Policy Committee is seeking comment (.pdf file) through Jan. 14 on including occupation and industry data in electronic health records.

HITPC advises the Department of Health and Human Services about federal health information technology. At issue is the definition of “meaningful use” of electronic health records for the purposes of Medicare and Medicaid. NIOSH said it supports including occupation and industry information because doing so can help improve diagnosis, disease management, and injury and illness prevention, as well as enable agencies to better track causes of death.
