Industry Spotlight: Food manufacturing
Establishments that manufacture or process foods, beverages and related products such as chewing gum and vegetable oil belong to the food manufacturing group. Employment in food manufacturing exceeded 1.4 million in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than 80,000 injuries and illnesses were reported that year. The total recordable case injury and illness rate was 5.6 and the rate of cases requiring days away from work, job restriction or transfer was 3.5.
