FRA final rule aims to strengthen bridge safety programs

The Federal Railroad Administration recently issued a final rule that will require railroad track owners to implement bridge management programs that include program audits and annual inspections of railroad bridges.

The final rule (.pdf file), published in the July 15 Federal Register, also requires track owners to know the safe load capacity of bridges and conduct special inspections if the weather or other conditions warrant such inspections.

The final rule is scheduled to go into effect Sept. 13.
