Groups issue guidance on wellness programs, incentives

Elk Grove Village, IL – The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and other groups recently published a joint statement (.pdf file) on best practices for using outcomes-based incentives in wellness programs.

Outcomes-based wellness programs financially reward employees for meeting certain health outcomes or penalize them for failing to do so. The groups said they are not advocating the programs, but expect them to become more prevalent due to a provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The statement addresses elements of a reasonably designed program and compliance with relevant legislation. Some best practices include creating a workplace culture that supports healthy behaviors and a strategic plan to guide wellness goals.

The statement was published in the July issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
