LaHood: Cell phone enforcement campaign nabs thousands
More than 2,300 drivers in and near Syracuse, NY, were cited for texting or using a handheld cell phone during the first wave of the Department of Transportation's "Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other." enforcement campaign, which took place April 8-17, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood reported in a recent blog post.
LaHood said law enforcement officials in Hartford, CT, reported similar numbers. The two-year, two-state pilot program is intended to catch drivers who violate laws banning the use of handheld cell phones and texting while driving. Subsequent enforcement waves are scheduled to take place July 22-31 and Oct. 7-16 this year and April 7-16 in 2011. DOT officials said researchers will study results of the enforcement pilot program to analyze changes in attitudes and behavior.
