Oregon FACE issues report on 2009 fatalities
Portland, OR – The number of workplace fatalities in Oregon remained relatively stable in 2009, according to an annual report (.pdf file) from the Oregon Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program.
The program identified 64 worker deaths in 2009, compared with 61 in 2008 and 68 in 2007. The state’s fatality rate was 3.5 per 100,000 employees in 2009 – the same as the national rate that year.
Other findings include:
- Transportation incidents were the most common event leading to death, followed by contact with objects or equipment.
- After other services, the agriculture industry had the highest death count (eight), followed by forestry/logging (six) and construction (six).
- Violence accounted for three of the five female fatalities in 2009.
