Annual campaign urges workers to ‘Drive Focused, Drive Smart’

McLean, VA – The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety is offering a free online toolkit to help employers keep workers and their families safe on the road as part of NETS’ Drive Safely Work Week Oct. 5-9.

Drive Focused – Drive Smart – Get Home Safely emphasizes staying alert while driving and refraining from texting and cellphone use – even hands-free – when behind the wheel. It also focuses on eco-friendly driving and ways to minimize potential effects on the environment.

The toolkit includes an interactive distracted driving self-assessment in which users answer questions about their driving habits. Other resources include fact sheets for employers and employees, pledge cards, a PowerPoint presentation, and graphics for social media and email use.

In a statement to Safety+Health, NETS Executive Director Joseph McKillips stressed that “materials are not dated and available to all.”

Traffic crashes cost employers more than $60 billion annually, according to NETS. The group cited National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data showing driver inattention is a factor in 80 percent of all crashes.
