NIOSH video tells story of fishermen saved by personal flotation devices

Washington – A new video from NIOSH uses a true story to show how wearing a personal flotation device can save lives in the fishing industry.

The 10-minute video, Paul Revere: A Story of Survival in Bristol Bay, tells the story of a crew that survived two hours in frigid Alaskan waters after their vessel capsized. Personal flotation devices allowed the fishermen to stay afloat as they made their way to shore.

Noting that more than half of U.S. commercial fishing fatalities stem from vessel incidents, NIOSH recommends that fishing crews always wear personal flotation devices while onboard.
