Washington – More than 3.5 million drivers across 20 states ran red lights in 2013, according to a study from the National Coalition for Safer Roads.
Researchers analyzed data from 2,216 red-light safety cameras across more than 200 areas in 20 states and found:
- Of holiday travel periods, Memorial Day weekend ranked the highest, with 39,021 red-light violations.
- Friday had the highest number of violations during the week, with 570,151.
- Sunday proved to have the fewest red-light violations, with 439,323.
- Most violations (about 30 percent) took place between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
In 2011, the most recent year for which data is available, intersection-related motor vehicle crashes caused more than 8,500 deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
