Washington – Halloween can be a lot of fun for children, but the American College of Emergency Physicians is reminding parents to keep safety in mind.
According to ACEP, the chance of a child being hit by a car is about 4 times higher on Halloween than on any other night. The organization recommends parents remind children to walk on sidewalks and obey traffic signals, stay in a group with at least one adult, and never accept rides from strangers.
Other recommendations:
- Avoid costumes that could cause tripping, such as baggy pants, high heels and oversized shoes.
- Avoid costumes that block vision.
- Make sure masks are well-ventilated.
- Costume fabric, wigs and beards should be flame-resistant.
- Costumes should be visible at night. Avoid dark colors and add reflective tape.
