Falls Church, VA – The American Industrial Hygiene Association recently launched an online resource center to help inform consumers about formaldehyde in laminate wood flooring and other household items.
The site provides answers to frequently asked questions and recommendations for finding an industrial hygienist to test possible problem areas, as well as contact information for federal agencies.
According to AIHA, formaldehyde is a naturally occurring chemical that is used in a variety of products, including particle board, plywood, glues and insulation materials. Small quantities of formaldehyde exist in most homes, but more of the chemical can be released over time as certain products age.
Increased exposure to formaldehyde can lead to headaches, eye and throat irritation, and respiratory problems, AIHA states. Long-term exposure has been associated with cancer. People can lower formaldehyde concentrations by opening doors and windows or using fans to improve ventilation. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers also can help because they reduce heat and humidity.
