U.S. traffic-related deaths have increased 11 percent during the past three months, and 8 percent during the past six months. The National Safety Council expects this trend to continue into the summer.
“Summer is typically a high-exposure period with lots of miles driven and several long holiday weekends,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of NSC. “Take your responsibilities behind the wheel this summer seriously and ensure that you get to your destination safely.”
Among the tips the council offers for driving safely:
- Make sure every passenger wears a safety belt.
- Designate an alcohol- and drug-free driver or arrange alternate transportation.
- Take regular breaks to avoid fatigue on long trips.
- Never use a cell phone behind the wheel.
