Washington – NIOSH has released the fifth edition, and first exclusively electronic version, of its Manual of Analytical Methods.
The manual is a collection of methods for sampling and analyzing toxins in workplace air and surfaces, as well as in the blood and urine of exposed workers. The methods outline how to collect and analyze samples in regard to existing standards. Results can help determine whether action should be taken to reduce worker exposure, NIOSH states. The methods have been evaluated based on experimental protocols and performance criteria.
The fifth edition includes 57 methods – including six new biomonitoring methods – and 10 new or updated guidance chapters, which address subjects such as sampling workplace aerosols, monitoring diesel exhaust and measuring fibers.
The manual is updated after new methods are created and validated, and revised methods are assessed and their performance certified. The electronic format allows NIOSH the ability to add updated methods and guidance chapters.
“We are continually keeping track of new developments in industrial hygiene and biomonitoring methods, as well as consensus standards,” NIOSH Director John Howard said in a press release. “The NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods remains an invaluable global resource for occupational safety and health professionals and NIOSH is pleased to provide the newest edition to them.”
