Washington – The deadline for individuals and organizations to submit comments on a proposed rule requiring speed-limiting devices on large trucks and buses has been pushed back to Dec. 7, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced.
The new deadline is in response to a surge of comments that were submitted ahead of the original Nov. 7 deadline. At press time, more than 1,500 individuals and organizations had posted comments on the proposed rule.
The rule calls for all newly manufactured trucks, buses and multipurpose passenger vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds to be equipped with speed-limiting devices. FMCSA and NHTSA proposed capping speeds at 60, 65 or 68 mph for such vehicles, but indicated they might be willing to adjust the maximum set travel speed.
FMCSA states that speed limiters on heavy vehicles could prevent fatalities and save an estimated $1 billion in fuel costs every year.
