Washington – The National Transportation Safety Board has reiterated the need for increased implementation of collision-avoidance technologies by including the issue on its list of 10 Most Wanted safety improvements for 2017-2018, presented Nov. 14 by Chairman Christopher A. Hart.
Other issues returning to the list this year include:
- Eliminating distractions
- Reducing fatigue-related crashes
- Improving rail transit safety oversight
- Preventing loss of control in flight in general aviation
- Ending alcohol and other drug impairment in transportation
- Requiring medical fitness for duty
- Strengthening occupant protection
- Expanding recorder use
The lone new issue on the list is ensuring the safe shipment of hazardous materials.
“The NTSB’s recommendations are based on decades of investigations – their work uncovers both the proximate causes and the contributing factors that result in thousands of fatalities in transportation each year,” former NTSB Chair and current National Safety Council President and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman said in an NSC press release. “The Most Wanted List provides a roadmap for policymakers, organizations and individuals to follow to reduce deaths and injuries in transportation.”
