Greenbelt, MD – Law enforcement officers are expected to keep a particularly sharp eye on the roads Oct. 15-21 during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Operation Safe Driver Week.
Officers will be looking for commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in dangerous behaviors such as speeding, texting, following too closely and not wearing seat belts.
During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, 20,648 CMV and passenger vehicle drivers in the United States and Canada received citations or warnings. In data collected from 3,000 law enforcement personnel, 56.7 percent of CMV drivers were cited or warned about state/local moving violations, while speeding (39.4 percent) was the leading offense among passenger vehicle drivers.
CVSA started its Operation Safe Driver campaign in 2007 to help reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries as a result of unsafe driving behaviors. Safe Driver Week is sponsored in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and supported by industry and transportation safety organizations.
