Washington — OSHA and the trucking industry have partnered on a flier intended to raise awareness of the three most common hazards tractor-trailer drivers face after reaching their destinations.
The flier provides tips for parking, backing up and coupling/uncoupling vehicles. Among the tips:
Parking:
- Digital Partners -
- Park on level ground and close to the receiving door or site.
- Set and test brakes.
- Place wheel chocks between the tandem wheels of the trailer.
- Do not attempt to stop a rolling vehicle.
Backing up:
- GOAL: Get Out And Look.
- Use flashers, horn and backup alarms.
- Check both mirrors.
- Roll down windows to hear.
- Know the vehicle’s blind spots.
- Use a spotter.
- Back up slowly.
- Stand clear when opening doors for unloading.
Coupling/uncoupling:
- Ensure only trained workers perform this procedure.
- Wear bright, visible clothing.
- Set parking brakes and perform tug test.
- Ensure stable footing when releasing the fifth wheel or adjusting tandems.
- Keep clear of tires and frames.
- Check for vehicular traffic near you.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13 of the 96 truck transportation fatalities in Midwestern states from 2015 to 2017 occurred during coupling/uncoupling activities.
