PHMSA seeking nominations for new lithium battery safety committee

Washington — The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is accepting nominations for its Lithium Battery Safety Advisory Committee, the agency announced in a notice published in the May 14 Federal Register.

The mission of the committee, which is mandated under the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018, is to promote the safe transport of lithium ion and lithium metal cells and batteries, as well as enhance the effectiveness and economic and social impacts of related regulation.

“The committee will facilitate communication among manufacturers of lithium ion and lithium metal cells and batteries, manufacturers of products incorporating both large and small lithium ion and lithium metal batteries, air carriers, and the federal government,” PHMSA states.

Among the groups needed for committee representation are manufacturers of lithium batteries, manufacturers of vehicles or products powered by the batteries, and cargo and passenger air service providers and their pilots or other employees.

Nominations are due June 4.
