Washington — Intended to protect package delivery workers from exposure to COVID-19, a new OSHA safety alert lists precautions employers should take during the pandemic.
Released April 13, the guidance calls on employers to minimize workers’ interactions with customers by instructing them to leave deliveries at doorsteps, loading docks or other locations where personal contact can be avoided. Additionally, employers should encourage workers to stay home when they are sick and establish flexible work hours (e.g., staggering shifts), if possible.

Other recommendations:
- Practice physical distancing by maintaining at least 6 feet of space between co-workers as much as possible.
- Encourage respiratory etiquette, including covering coughs and sneezes.
- Promote personal hygiene. If workers don’t have access to soap and water for handwashing, provide hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol.
- Use cleaning products listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as effective against the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19 or that have label claims against coronaviruses.
- Discourage workers from sharing tools and equipment.
- Allow workers to wear masks that cover their nose and mouth.
- Encourage workers to report any safety and health concerns.
