Employers in the automotive service industry can reduce workers’ risk of exposure to COVID-19. Ensuring workers disinfect keys, key fobs, steering wheels, vehicle controls and all other commonly touched surfaces are among the recommendations listed in guidelines from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (also known as Cal/OSHA) as well as in a poster recently published by federal OSHA.
In addition, employers should encourage workers to stay home when they’re feeling ill and ensure at least 6 feet of space is maintained between co-workers and customers, where possible. Other tips:
- Provide employees with gloves and masks or other face coverings.
- Minimize or eliminate the use of shared equipment and tools.
- Allow customers to drop off and pick up vehicles after hours using a “night drop” box or slot to limit personal contact, and consider allowing use of a drop box-style system during working hours.
- Remove amenities, including magazines, books, coffee, water and other items, from waiting rooms.
- Close or limit customer access to reception areas and waiting rooms.
- Request customers wear face coverings when dropping off a vehicle or talking with staff.
- Communicate with customers via text, email or phone.
