NYC wants to help delivery workers charge e-bikes safely

New York — Delivery workers in New York City will soon have places to safely charge the lithium-ion batteries on their e-bikes.

Intended to protect New Yorkers from fires caused by lithium-ion batteries being charged indoors, the Charge Safe, Ride Safe pilot program will provide battery-swapping networks and secure bike parking docks with fast-charging capabilities at various locations across the city.

Laura Kavanaugh, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, said promoting safe practices related to lithium-ion batteries is one of FDNY’s top priorities. “We know these fires can cause serious injury and even death,” Kavanaugh said in a press release, adding that the pilot will help New Yorkers “embrace this new technology while also protecting lives.”
