Washington — New videos from OSHA feature safe practices for workers tasked with cleaning up after a flood or using a portable generator.
Flood cleanup tips include:
- Never enter floodwaters without a co-worker, personal floatation device and protective gear.
- Turn off any breakers and fuses in the area, and stay clear of any downed or damaged power lines.
- Be aware that flooded areas may have contamination from sewage and harmful chemicals. Wear personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves.
- Use proper lifting techniques and work in teams of two or more to move heavier items such as sandbags or tree limbs.
The agency warns that water cooler than 75° F will remove body heat faster than it can be replaced. To prevent hypothermia, employers should allow workers to take breaks in warm areas, consume warm food and drinks, and wear appropriate PPE.

For portable generators, only use them outside and at least 20 feet away from any doors, windows or vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Always inspect generators for damaged or loose fuel lines, and keep them dry.
