Los Angeles — Eighty-nine community-based organizations are set to receive a combined $25.2 million in funding from the California Department of Industrial Relations to promote workplace safety and provide worker rights education.
The organizations are part of the California Workplace Outreach Project, which helps educate and assist workers in high-risk industries on issues such as health, safety and hazard prevention.
The financial support is critical for workers involved in Los Angeles-area wildfire cleanup and rebuilding efforts, DIR says in a press release.
Eight of the organizations are set to receive more than $500,000:
- Center for Workers’ Rights, $672,500
- The Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety & Health: A Project of Community Partners, $667,500
- Fresno-Madera-Tulare-Kings, Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, $622,500
- Worksafe, $592,500
- AFL-CIO of San Bernadino and Riverside counties (Inland Empire Labor Council), $570,000
- AFL-CIO Monterey Bay Central Labor Council, $555,000
- Los Angeles Black Worker Center, $540,000
- Labors Training and Community Development Alliance/Employee Rights Center, $510,000
Twenty-one groups in the Los Angeles region are being awarded nearly $6 million in funding.
“California offers a range of services to protect workers, but these resources can go underutilized without proper awareness,” DIR Director Katie Hagen said in the release. “CWOP bridges this gap by connecting workers to labor protections through trusted community groups.”
