NSC scholarships provide path for military veterans, students and more

Denver — As a new safety and health professional, Joe Smith thought he had the safety and health program for his employer all set.

That was until Smith, a military veteran, discovered the National Safety Council’s free Advanced Safety Certificate Scholarship for Veterans (sponsored by The Boeing Co.).

“I thought I had a direction where I was going with the program,” he said Wednesday in the Safety Huddle on the Expo Floor during the 2025 NSC Safety Congress & Expo. “I threw that out and now, I have a clear direction. The training was phenomenal, and it made me completely rethink what I wanted to do with my program. I’m so appreciative of this!”

During the session, Amy Artuso, director of mobility safety programs at NSC, highlighted the nonprofit’s scholarship programs and other various free programs available.

“We have college scholarships, but you don’t have to be a college student to get a scholarship,” she said. “One scholarship (the NSC Safety Congress & Expo Scholarship) helps get you to the NSC Safety Congress & Expo for that professional experience.”

Smith, safety and environmental coordinator for Brevard County (FL) Public Works, was among the 50 veterans who made up the initial group of ASC scholars, all of whom traveled to Denver for NSC’s premier event.

The program also connects veterans with environmental, health and safety professionals and career resources.

NSC offers many other scholarship opportunities. Among them:

  • Lorraine Pack Memorial Scholarship
  • NSC Advanced Safety Certificate Scholarship Certificate Assistance Program
  • Safety for All Scholarships
