ATRI requests info on new truckers for safety study

Washington — The American Transportation Research Institute wants to hear from motor carriers for a study exploring how training for new truck drivers affects safety and driver retention.

ATRI, the research arm of the American Trucking Associations, is seeking carrier data for drivers who have:

  • Had a commercial driver’s license for three weeks to two years.
  • Worked for the carrier in their first professional trucking job.
  • Joined the carrier in or after March 2022.

Carriers must have employed at least 25 “new entrant drivers” from March 2022 through August to be eligible for the study. They’ll be asked to provide data for each driver covering:

  • Demographics, such as days employed, CDL training provider, total miles driven, etc.
  • Driver-specific safety events including crashes, select violations and select telematic events
