Washington – The Federal Highway Administration will not split the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices into two documents, as proposed in January, the agency announced June 17.
FHWA said the proposed split, intended to increase the manual’s accessability, would have created one document subject to rulemaking and another with supplemental materials not subject to rulemaking. The agency received 169 comments, including 40 from state departments of transportation and 17 from professional associations. The majority of respondents opposed splitting up the document, with some claiming that doing so would cause confusion and result in misapplication of traffic control devices.
FHWA stated in the Federal Register notice that it will focus on other ways to make the manual streamlined and easier to use.
