New NIOSH recommendations address nanomaterials

Washington – New recommendations issued by NIOSH on Nov. 8 address protecting workers during processes that use engineered nanomaterials.

When possible, employers should use engineering controls to address the source of the hazard by removing it or creating a barrier that prevents exposure, according to NIOSH. The recommendations outline controls for a variety of work processes, including reactor operations, small-scale weighing and handling of nanopowders, finishing processes, and maintenance tasks.
