Washington — NIOSH has launched a commemorative webpage to mark the agency’s 50th anniversary.
The webpage features:
- A visual timeline of NIOSH’s history
- Webinars with scientists, past NIOSH employees and agency partners
- Blog entries detailing agency history, research and key processes
- An archive of shareable social media posts
Established on April 28, 1971, after the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 was signed into law by President Richard Nixon four months earlier, NIOSH – a division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – works to inform the public on occupational safety and health issues by conducting research and publishing resources and recommendations.
Through the years, the agency has identified and explored emerging safety and health concerns, including those related to the COVID-19 pandemic, while adding new areas and industries to its scope of expertise.
“Our nation has evolved rapidly in the last 50 years, and the jobs workers do, the hazards they face and the way their work is organized have significantly changed,” NIOSH Director John Howard said in a press release. “On this 50th year commemoration of NIOSH, the institute recommits to addressing both persistent and emerging issues, looking at workplace culture, and challenging our research to be both innovative and forward-thinking.”
