Lawmaker calls for hearing on safety of nation’s bridges

Washington – In the aftermath of the May 23 collapse of a portion of a bridge in Washington state, Rep. Janice Hahn (D-CA) is calling on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to host a hearing to discuss the safety of U.S. bridges.

In a recent letter to the committee, Hahn noted that the bridge in Washington had been classified by the Department of Transportation as “structurally obsolete.” In addition, 70,000 other bridges in the country are classified as “structurally deficient,” she stated.

Hahn also encouraged her colleagues to pass H.R. 1419 (.pdf file), a bill she introduced April 9 that would provide $10 million to eligible states for bridge repair programs.
