FMCSA fines tank manufacturer nearly $4 million for safety violations

Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued more than $3.8 million in fines against American Welding & Tank for failing to meet hazardous materials safety standards in its production of cargo tanks.

FMCSA issued the fine after an investigation found that the Mechanicsburg, PA-based company’s nurse tanks did not meet federal hazmat safety standards for manufacturing, maintenance and repairs, according to an agency press release. Nurse tanks typically are used to transport anhydrous ammonia, a hazardous chemical used for farming applications.

FMCSA conducted the investigation following reports of safety defects in tanks manufactured at the company’s Fremont, OH, plant.
