DOT gathers submissions for safety belt art contest

Washington – The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Belt Partnership is inviting kids to create posters for the 2011 “Be Read, Be Buckled” art contest (.pdf file), Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced in a Feb. 23 blog post.

The partnership – composed of private-sector organizations, associations and government agencies including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – is encouraging commercial drivers to buckle up. The annual contest runs through Feb. 28.

According to FMCSA, safety belt use jumped to 74 percent in 2009 from 48 percent in 2003. However, that is still lower than the 85 percent of all drivers on the road who wore safety belts in 2010.
