Washington – The Consumer Product Safety Commission on Jan. 31 voted to extend until Dec. 31 the stay of enforcement for testing and certifying lead content in children’s products.
After that date, manufacturers and importers of children’s products must have the appropriate certifications proving a CPSC-approved third-party laboratory has tested their products before selling them in the United States.
Even with the extension of the stay, manufacturers, importers and retailers still are required to comply with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (.pdf file), which requires all children’s products to have no more than 300 parts per million of lead content. That limit will drop to 100 ppm on Aug. 14 unless CPSC determines this to be technologically unfeasible.
The stay does not apply to the 90 ppm lead limit on paint and surface coatings, or the 300 ppm limit on metal components of children’s jewelry.
