Greenbelt, MD — Commercial motor vehicle inspectors across North America are set to conduct brake system inspections – announced and unannounced – Aug. 23-29 during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week.
Inspectors are expected to place special emphasis on brake drums and rotors. CVSA says issues with this equipment may affect a vehicle’s brake efficiency. Broken drum and rotor pieces also may dislodge from a vehicle, leading to damage to other vehicles or injuries or deaths among road users.
Last year’s event resulted in more than 15,000 inspections and identified nearly 2,300 vehicles with out-of-service conditions.
Brake Safety Week is part of Brake Safety Awareness Month. The event is aligned with CVSA’s Operation Airbrake campaign – a program conducted in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, and Mexico’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation and National Guard.
