Emmitsburg, MD – Reducing residential arson is the theme of Arson Awareness Week, which will take place May 5-11, the U.S. Fire Administration recently announced.
USFA said it will provide people with strategies to help reduce residential arson incidents in their neighborhoods.
Reasons for arson include curiosity, vandalism, concealing another crime and revenge. Data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System shows 5 percent of residential building fires from 2008 to 2010 were intentionally set, with lighters being the primary heat source. The typical items set on fire were rubbish, trash and waste; magazines, newspapers and writing paper; and flammable liquids or gas.
