Hours-of-service rule tops trucking industry concerns: survey

Washington – Recent changes to federal hours-of-service rules top a list of concerns identified by members of the trucking industry in a survey conducted by the American Transportation Research Institute.

ATRI, which is the research arm of the American Trucking Associations, asked 4,000 truck drivers, carriers and other stakeholders to list the issues most affecting their operations. Many of the 1,327 respondents named the HOS rule as their top concern, alleging it harms productivity by changing when and how drivers take breaks.

The second top concern was the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, which some respondents claim is flawed and unable to identify unsafe carriers.

Other issues cited by truckers included electronic logging device mandates, truck parking, and driver health and wellness.
