DOL releases six-year strategic plan
Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis unveiled her department's six-year strategic plan (.pdf file) for ensuring "good jobs for everyone" while improving safety in the workplace.
Covering fiscal years 2011-2016, the plan states OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration will use "rigorous enforcement, science-based rulemaking and stakeholder involvement" to improve workplace safety and health.
To reach that goal, the plan states OSHA will use the recently launched Severe Violator Enforcement Program, restructured penalty procedures and National Emphasis Programs.
Measurements for reaching this goal include reducing fatal injuries associated with the four leading causes of workplace deaths: falls, electrocutions, caught in or between, and struck by. Specifically, OSHA is tasked with reducing these types of deaths in general industry from 743 in FY 2009 to a target goal of 679 in FY 2016.
