FAA proposes new helicopter safety rules

The Federal Aviation Administration is accepting comment until Jan. 10, 2011, on proposed emergency helicopter safety operational procedures.

FAA officials said many of the proposed changes, published in a notice of proposed rulemaking (.pdf file) in the Oct. 12 Federal Register, are found in agency guidance publications and are intended to address safety recommendations made by the National Transportation Safety Board following a hearing regarding the increase in fatal helicopter air ambulance incidents between 2002 and 2008.
