Nova Scotia to fine workers for violations
Workers in Nova Scotia now face fines for safety violations under a new law that went into effect Jan. 15.
The new regulation allows an administrator to assign penalties after reviewing orders issued by a safety and health officer following a workplace violation, according to a press release from the Canadian province's government. The penalties for employees will be smaller than those for employers and supervisors, and can be appealed. Fines may be increased for repeat infractions.
"Workplace safety is a shared responsibility," Labour and Workforce Development Minister Marilyn More said in the press release. "These administrative penalties are another deterrent which will help us become a province that has no workplace accidents or fatalities."
Similar policies already are in place in other Canadian jurisdictions.
