PHMSA announces funding to prevent digging incidents

Washington – The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration on May 16 announced more than $1 million in grant funding aimed at reducing pipeline digging incidents.

The funding will support state “One Call” centers, which contractors and homeowners are required to call – using the Call Before You Dig 811 national hotline – at least two days before digging. The funds also will help states purchase upgraded communication technologies and public information education materials.

According to the Department of Transportation, one-third of serious pipeline incidents could be prevented if all diggers used the One Call centers.
