OSHA launches emphasis program on poultry industry in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri

Kansas City, MO – Federal statistics show that more than 1 in 14 poultry-processing workers suffers recordable injuries or illnesses on the job – a far higher proportion than other private-sector workers.

The exorbitant amount of injuries and illnesses must not continue, OSHA says. The agency announced March 17 that it is launching a Regional Emphasis Program in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri to combat musculoskeletal disorders and ergonomic problems among at-risk poultry-processing workers.

The REP will run through Sept. 30, but may be extended. The program will start with education and prevention outreach activities for affected employers, associations and workers.

Employers should make sure their facilities are compliant with federal safety and health standards during this period, OSHA says. For more information about the REP, call the agency’s Kansas City Regional Office at (816) 283-8745.

“This region-wide emphasis program provides outreach and education to assist poultry processing industry employers to eliminate injuries, illnesses and hazards that can harm workers,” Marcia Drumm, regional administrator for OSHA, said in a press release. “The program will also re-direct OSHA’s resources and increase the probability of inspections at establishments in the poultry processing industry.”
