FMCSA introduces campaign to promote driver safety around CMVs

August 17, 2016

Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has launched Our Roads, Our Responsibility, a campaign intended to remind drivers to be safe around commercial motor vehicles.

Large trucks can have a turning radius of up to 55 feet and typically weigh 20 to 30 times as much as a passenger vehicle, and buses can take 40 percent longer to stop than other vehicles, according to the campaign’s promotional materials, which include public service announcements, graphics and fact sheets.

These vehicles also have larger blind spots and face challenges when maneuvering, creating potential safety issues for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

FMCSA shares the following tips for staying safe around CMVs:

  • Keep out of these vehicles’ blind spots, or “no zones.”
  • Ensure you can see the driver of large truck or bus in your mirror before passing the vehicle.
  • Leave enough space when merging in front of these vehicles.
  • Avoid distractions, remain patient and wear your seat belt.

The campaign also includes information on CMV statistics in each state, as well as outreach materials.
