100 years of Safety+Health: Raising the profile of women in safety

October 27, 2019

Every month during 2019, Safety+Health will be sharing bits of the magazine’s history from its first 100 years.

In May 1944, National Safety News reported on “what is believed to be the first class of the 96-hour Industrial Safety Engineering Course exclusively for women.” The article goes on to say that “Each student is anxious to get into industrial safety work, either in the company where she is now employed or in some other company where this training and interest can be used.”

Today, women have made their mark in the field – but remain underrepresented. Groups such as the National Safety Council Women’s Caucus continue to raise the profile of women in occupational safety and health and, through columns such as “My Story,” Safety+Health is proud to promote their accomplishments.
