3M recalls self-retracting lanyards over brake concerns

July 18, 2012

Concord, NC – A series of self-retracting lanyards sold by 3M has been recalled (.pdf file) by the company out of concerns that the devices could fail to properly arrest a fall.

3M advises customers of the THOR family of self-retracting lanyard units (M-, RLD- and 205G- series) manufactured from Nov. 1, 2011, to June 25 to immediately stop using the units, quarantine them and return them to the 3M distributor where they were purchased.

3M was informed by lanyard manufacturer IKAR GmbH that the supplier of the brake pad material used in THOR lanyards had quality issues with the pads, and a “small number” of the defective pads may have been used by IKAR.

Customers whose returned units are confirmed to be affected by the defect will receive new units of equal or greater value at no charge.
