Cal/OSHA launches heat awareness campaign

California will be taking to the airwaves and highways to reach out to outdoor workers in an effort to prevent heat-related illnesses and injuries.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health announced last week the launch of a public campaign that will use paid radio and billboard advertisements to complement training provided to employers and employees.

Cal/OSHA's campaign addresses safety precautions and worker rights under the state's heat illness prevention standard. This is the first time the agency has attempted such a campaign, which will run in several languages, including Spanish, Punjabi and Hmong, according to an agency press release.

Cal/OSHA also announced the launch of a "programmed outreach effort" in which agency inspection teams will appear at various agricultural and outdoor worksites. Locations will be chosen based on temperatures, the agency said.
