CSB announces meeting on fatal plant blast

January 21, 2010

Preliminary findings from an investigation into last summer's fatal explosion at a North Carolina ConAgra Slim Jim facility will be released next month, the Chemical Safety Board announced Jan. 15.

Four employees were killed in the June 9 blast at the Garner, NC, plant when natural gas was purged into the building during the commissioning of a new gas-fired industrial water heater. The accumulated gas later ignited, creating a blast that resulted in the collapse of large sections of the building.

Because a number of similar gas purging incidents have occurred in recent years, the CSB report on the Garner explosion will recommend measures to prevent such catastrophes, according to an agency press release.

CSB will host a public meeting on its investigation on Feb. 4 in Raleigh, NC. Pre-registration is not required but is encouraged.
