Ferro outlines goals for CMV driver wellness

November 18, 2010

The bar for truck driver health in the motor carrier industry needs to be raised, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Anne S. Ferro told attendees of the inaugural International Conference on Commercial Driver Health and Wellness on Nov. 8.

Ferro encouraged attendees to gain a better understanding of the nature of the commercial motor vehicle driver health problem by reviewing new research and successful health and wellness programs. CMV drivers have a history of poor health stemming from irregular schedules, long work hours, poor diet and nutrition, and stress from driving in heavy traffic and bad weather, Ferro said.

FMCSA will develop an implementation summary of core elements of an effective driver health and wellness program, she said. The "matrix" of programs will be made available next summer.
